STORY
Gold Was Made Fa' Her (GWMFH), created by transdisciplinary artist Bria Lauren, began as a visual love letter and body of photographic work in 2019 dedicated to Black hood women on the Southside of Houston, Texas, and Lauren's mother, Rhonda "Mama Peaches" Renee Harrison - Davis. GWMFH was manifested out of necessity to memorialize and amplify the voices and visibility of Black women across generations who have been impacted by structural inequity, generational narratives, and respectability politics.
Incorporated on July 6, 2023, GWMFH is a 501(c)(3) arts and healing movement dedicated to advancing economic justice, the legacy of Black women artists and their work, and radical care for Black women and communities in the Black South.

GWMFH ESIDENCY
Gold Was Made Fa’ Her is an annual residency dedicated to celebrating and championing Black women artists by providing unrestricted funding, curatorial support, and space to amplify their stories and practice. With the support of our community partners, GWMFH is committed to advancing the visibility, impact, and legacy of Black women artists in the South.
In partnership with the Carver Museum and curatorial fellow Mueni Rudd, our first 2025 GWMFH Resident was Houston-based contemporary artist and visual activist Irene Antonia Diane Reece. Her exhibition, Home-goings—featuring photography and installations that explore African American spirituality, Black Southern churches, and Black Liberation Theology—was on view at the Carver Museum from March 8 to June 21, 2025.

Manifested from the spirit and success of the Jack Yates Production Experience (JYPE) in 2022 and 2023, Roses Still Bloom In My Hood is an immersive project-based program that nurtures students’ imagination beyond the classroom and introduces them to the infinite possibilities within the arts and creative industries through hands on engagement and creative activations.

Black Hotties Heal is a therapy voucher program and an offering of sacred ceremonies that support Black women in their healing journey with access to integrated healing modalities and mental health tools provided by certified and licensed practitioners.

EXPERIENCE 2023
The Jack Yates Production Experience is an immersive teaching experience that nurtures imagination beyond the classroom and exposes the students of Jack Yates to infinite possibilities of the arts and creative industry. In 2023, Gold Was Made Fa' Her produced senior portraits and a multimedia visual series that celebrated the identity, legacy, and brilliance of graduating students—positioning them not just as scholars, but as storytellers and culture bearers in their own right.
